Adelaide Cann lives in Sydney, Australia. She is an accomplished Miniature Artist who works mostly in 1:12 scale (that is 1" to 1 foot in imperial measurement terms) or dolls house scale. Adelaide likes to design and construct miniature rooms and accessories to showcase her collections of miniatures.
Past Present Future
When Adelaide was about 10 years old she saw the most amazing doll collection. There were more than sixty dolls dressed in their country of origin ranging in height from 1" to 16". From then on she was smitten with dolls, in particular, dolls under 3" tall.
Adelaide made cloth dolls, teddy bears and collected small dolls until she was about 15 years old then started making her own clothes. Designing clothes, making the patterns and sewing was her forte so she decided on a career in the fashion design industry but this did not materialise. She
has for the most part of her working career been involved in the
corporate information technology (IT) in sales operations and
computer skills training areas. Now her two sons, Casey and Elliott are grown up she has more time to devote to her miniature passion and hopes to one day open a Miniatures Museum.
Miniatures Journey In February 2000 she came across a magazine called 'Your Dream Doll’s House' by Del Prado publications and so started her journey of discovery into the world of miniatures. She researched and visited miniature shops near home, purchased a dolls house and found like minded miniature devotees.
She likes to design and
construct miniature rooms in 1:12 scale; that is 1" to 1 foot in imperial
measurement terms, to house her miniature collections. She says: real size items can
be easily downsized to 1:12 scale or smaller making it simple to have in
miniature items I do not or would not have in real size (or life). It’s the challenge of miniaturization and
making a little work of art that most appeals to Adelaide.
Her particular passion is for
beautiful little things, especially those that are decorative, intricate and
delicate. She has a remarkable ability to create tiny, believable worlds of her own
invention.Her miniature creations are
always of the highest quality and stands up to the closest scrutiny. The Plan The plan is to complete25 miniature rooms by 2015 to display her collections of miniatures.
Her personal miniatures collection
includes miniatures of all kinds in 1:12 scale and smaller.Lots of fine furniture in various period
styles, tiny teapots, toys and rocking horses, prams and baby dolls, delicate
clothing and haberdashery, most of which are of her own making. Her workroom has a wall of room boxes mostly
of her own design, all superbly finished and decorated. The innovative lighting systems make the room
boxes independent of the power point, so they can be illuminated wherever they
are.
Inspiration comes from many aspects of Adelaide's life, from the people she meets day to day to the websites she visits in search of new miniature project ideas. In her spare time she likes to share her enthusiasm and expertise tutoring workshops on her miniature creations.
Accessoring a miniature room is fun and often means travelling to miniature events to purchase items. She also designs and makes miniature items such as ladies apparel (dresses and intimates), shoes, printies of all kinds and toys. Favourite collectables are tea pots, dolls, teddy bears, toys, prams, sewing machines, rocking horses (and the list keeps growing).

There are many pluses in being involved in miniatures. It keeps you fit going to miniature events, your mind active and hands busy but beware, it may obsorb all your spare time, become addictive and keep you poor.
Adelaide loves her little treasures...it is the little things in life that count she says.
